Hello, my name is Jeff Thompson, and I will be your son or daughters Math teacher this year. This is my 22nd year teaching for the Menomonee Falls School District and my 31st year of teaching. Prior to teaching in Menomonee Falls, I have taught in; Waukesha, Plainfield (Illinois), and Whitefish Bay (Dominican High School). I grew up in Milwaukee and Richfield and attended Hartford Union High School. I received my undergraduate degree from UW-Whitewater in Mathematics Education in 1983 and completed my Masters Degree at Eastern Illinois University in 1988. I have lived in Menomonee Falls for the last 25 years. All three of my children graduated from Menomonee Falls High School. My oldest daughter graduated from Madison in 2007, got married in 2014 and is living in Scottsdale, AZ. My other daughter graduated from Madison in 2014 and is now living in Charolette, NC and is attending Graduate School at USC (University of South Carolina, Columbia) studying to be a Speech Language Pathologist. My youngest is a junior at UW-Whitewater where he is studying math and playing on the Mens Soccer Team.
I teach three sections of Algebra 2, two sections of AP Statistics and one section of College Prep Math. For each of my classes, I give and collect or check homework on a daily basis. If they do not have an assignment due for the next class period then they either just had a quiz or test or they should be preparing for one. Be sure to log in and check their status on PowerSchool. You can also visit each of my fusion pages specific to each of my classes.
In all of my classes we use a graphics calculator on a regular basis. The graphic calculator is a very helpful tool in allowing the students to focus on some of the details of the problems we work on in class and not get bogged down with some of the calculations. Many of my students have already discovered that these graphic calculators are also capable of being programmed to play computer games. Unfortunately, these games occupy a lot of their time that could be better spent doing homework and studying. You may want to monitor this with your son or daughter, as will I.
We will do a variety of activities in class, from working with partners or groups, class lecture and projects. Each activity is intended to get my students to think and talk about the concepts we are discussing. I feel that the more my students talk about the activities I ask them to engage in, the more that they are going to understand.
I am the Varsity Girls' Golf Coach in the fall and an Assistant Boys' Golf Coach in the Spring. For information about the Girls' Golf Program, please visit the webpage at http://www.fallsathletics.org/page/show/1260092-golf-girls
